ADOPTION

At Nevada Law Group, we actively support and advocate for people wishing to adopt a child. Having capable, trustworthy legal counsel enables you to prevent problems during the adoption process and focus on the joyful aspects of this life-changing event. Contact us to discuss your adoption needs.

Here are some basic aspects of Nevada adoption law:

  • An adult must be at least 10 years older than a minor child he or she wishes to adopt.
  • A minor child over the age of 14 years must formally consent to an adoption.
  • Any adult person, or any two persons married to each other or in a domestic partnership, may petition the district court of any Nevada county to adopt a child. If you are married or in a domestic partnership, your spouse must consent to any adoption you pursue.

Legal Counsel and Protection Throughout the Adoption Process

  • Our attorneys will take the appropriate steps to ensure that you obtain the consent from all parties needed for your adoption. We will review and advise you on any legal agreements throughout the process, doing everything we can to promote your successful, efficient adoption.
  • Should it be required, our attorneys can assist you with the termination of parental rights of one or both biological parents. The court’s standards to terminate a parent’s parental rights are very high and the assistance of competent legal counsel with such proceedings is vital to the eventual success of the adoption.
  • Should surrogacy, in vitro fertilization (IVF), or sperm donor contracts be required as part of this process, it is essential to legally protect yourself properly before beginning these processes.
  • We are also highly knowledgeable on the parental rights and guardianship issues faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) citizens.
  • We can advise you on issues such as co-guardianship, surrogacy and second-parent adoption.
  • Many of the laws governing adoption by people in a range of circumstances are complex and changing. Contact us for experienced counsel on building and protecting your family unit.
